Geography

The Geography report shows where your visitors come from, with country-level metrics and a world map.

Accessing the Report

  1. Select a site from the site selector
  2. Click Geography in the sidebar

URL pattern: /sites/{site_id}/geo

How the country is determined

The country of each session comes from the timezone configured in the visitor's browser, mapped to a country through an IANA timezone table — not from the IP address. Timezones used by a single country resolve with high confidence; shared timezones resolve to the most likely country, so precision is country-level only. Sessions whose timezone cannot be mapped are grouped under Unknown.

See How Sealmetrics determines the country without using IP addresses for the full method.

World Map

The Visitors by Country map shades each country according to its Entrances for the selected period.

Map Features

FeatureDescription
Color intensityDarker shading means more entrances; countries with no entrances are shown in grey
Hover tooltipShows the country flag and name, plus Entrances, Pageviews, Bounce rate, Conversions and Revenue
ZoomScroll to zoom, drag to pan
LegendScale from 0 to the highest number of entrances among the countries shown

The map always shades by Entrances; there is no metric selector. It reflects the active Segment and the table's Filters, but not the table search box.

Color Scale

The map uses a gradient from light to dark based on entrances:

IntensityMeaning
GreyNo entrances in the period
LightLow traffic volume
DarkHigh traffic volume

Country Table

The Top Countries table breaks down metrics by country.

ColumnDescription
CountryCountry name with flag icon
EntrancesSessions from this country
PageviewsTotal page views
Bounce RatePercentage of entrances with only one pageview. Shown in red above 70% and in green below 40%
ConversionsCompleted conversions
RevenueTotal conversion value

The table is sorted by Entrances (descending) by default. Click any column header to sort by it. It is paginated (10, 50, 100 or 500 rows per page) and loads the top 100 countries by entrances for the period.

Totals row

A Total row at the bottom shows the period totals for Entrances, Pageviews, Conversions and Revenue, plus the overall Bounce Rate (computed from total entrances and engaged entrances, not averaged across countries).

When table filters are active, two rows are shown: Total (all countries) and Filtered (only the rows that match). The Filtered row also shows each additive metric as a share of the total — for example "38.2% of total" under Revenue.

Period comparison

When you enable a comparison in the date range picker, Entrances, Pageviews, Conversions and Revenue show the change against the comparison period under each value. Bounce Rate has no comparison indicator.

Filtering

Global Filter Integration

The Segment panel in the filter bar applies to this report. All four Segment filters are applied when the data is loaded, so every country row, the map and the Total row reflect them:

Segment filterApplies to Geography
CountriesYes — only the selected countries are shown
Device TypeYes — metrics per country count only that device type
BrowserYes
Operating SystemYes

To apply one:

  1. Click Segment in the filter bar
  2. Choose values under Geography (Countries) or Devices (Device Type, Browser, Operating System)
  3. Click Apply Segment

The Segment panel has no traffic-source (UTM) filter, and this report has no UTM or campaign filter of its own. To see campaigns by country, use the Funnel report, which combines a country selector with a per-UTM table.

See Filters for how segments are saved and persisted.

Table Filter Builder

Click Filters above the table to open the filter builder. Click Add filter group, then pick a field, an operator and a value. Filters apply as you type and affect both the table and the map.

Available fields and operators:

FieldTypeOperators
Country CodeTextequals, does not equal, contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, is empty, is not empty
Country NameTextSame as Country Code
EntrancesNumberequals, does not equal, greater than, less than, greater or equal, less or equal
PageviewsNumberSame as Entrances
Bounce RatePercentage (0–100)Same as Entrances
ConversionsNumberSame as Entrances
RevenueCurrencySame as Entrances

Text comparisons are case-insensitive. Use Add condition to add more conditions to a group, and switch between AND and OR to combine conditions within a group and across groups. Clear all removes every condition.

The filter builder works on the countries already loaded (the top 100 by entrances).

Example filters:

GoalFilter
Countries with significant trafficEntrances greater than 100
Countries that convertConversions greater than 0
Countries with revenueRevenue greater than 0
Problem countriesBounce Rate greater than 70
A group of marketsCountry Code equals ES OR Country Code equals PT

The Search countries... box above the table matches the country code or name. It narrows the table only; the map and the export ignore it.

Map Interaction

Clicking a country on the map does not filter the table. To focus on one or more countries, use a Country Code condition in the table filter builder or the Countries filter in the Segment panel.

Metrics by Country

Understanding Geographic Performance

MetricGeographic Insight
EntrancesWhere your audience is located
Bounce RateContent relevance by region
ConversionsMarket fit by country
RevenueHighest-value markets

Conversion rate and revenue per entrance are not columns in this report. Calculate them from the table (Conversions ÷ Entrances, Revenue ÷ Entrances) — see the Metrics Reference.

Identifying Patterns

Look for:

  • High traffic, low conversion: May need localization
  • Low traffic, high conversion: Expansion opportunity
  • High bounce rate: Content or language mismatch
  • Revenue concentration: Market dependency risk

Use Cases

Identifying Top Markets

  1. Keep the default sort by Entrances (descending)
  2. Note the top 5-10 countries
  3. Compare with business priorities
  4. Check Conversions and Revenue for each

Finding Expansion Opportunities

  1. Sort by Conversions (descending)
  2. Filter: Entrances greater than 50, to leave out countries with too little traffic to read
  3. Look for countries with:
    • High conversions relative to entrances
    • Low current volume
    • Business expansion potential

Detecting Localization Needs

  1. Sort by Bounce Rate (descending)
  2. Filter: Entrances greater than 100
  3. High bounce + high traffic suggests:
    • Language barriers
    • Cultural mismatch
    • Landing pages that don't match what visitors from that country expected

Evaluating International Campaigns

The Geography report cannot be filtered by UTM source, medium or campaign. To evaluate a campaign by country:

  1. Set the date range to the campaign period
  2. Open the Funnel report and pick the country in the country selector
  3. Read the Funnel by UTM table for that country's campaigns
  4. Back in Geography, enable a comparison against the previous period to see how the country's totals moved

Revenue Analysis by Region

  1. Sort by Revenue (descending)
  2. Identify top revenue countries
  3. Calculate revenue per entrance (Revenue ÷ Entrances)
  4. Prioritize high-value markets

E-commerce use cases

These cases assume your store sends a purchase conversion with the order amount, so that Conversions and Revenue per country are populated. See E-commerce conversion tracking or your platform's integration (for example Shopify or WooCommerce).

Which countries actually buy, not just visit?

  1. Sort the table by Revenue (descending)
  2. Add the filter Entrances greater than a threshold that fits your traffic, so countries with a handful of sessions don't distort the picture
  3. For each country, calculate Conversions ÷ Entrances and Revenue ÷ Entrances

How to read it: a country that ranks high on Entrances but low on Revenue is sending browsers, not buyers — check whether you actually ship there, price in a currency it accepts, and offer its usual payment methods before spending more to acquire traffic there. A country with modest traffic but high revenue per entrance is a candidate for more acquisition budget.

Where do shoppers arrive but never buy?

  1. Open Filters and add a group with Entrances greater than your threshold AND Conversions equals 0
  2. Look at the Bounce Rate of the countries left

How to read it: a high bounce rate means visitors leave on the first page — look at language, landing page relevance and the traffic you are buying for that country. A normal bounce rate with no purchases means people browse but stop later — shipping costs, delivery options, payment methods or pricing are the usual suspects. To see at which step they stop, open the Funnel report and select the country: this needs add_to_cart and begin_checkout microconversions (see E-commerce conversion tracking), because the Geography report shows purchases but not microconversions.

Is mobile underperforming in one market?

  1. Click Segment, set Device Type to Mobile and click Apply Segment
  2. Note Entrances, Conversions and Revenue for your key countries
  3. Change the Segment to Desktop and note the same figures
  4. Compare Conversions ÷ Entrances per country between the two

How to read it: if mobile converts well below desktop in one country but not in others, the problem is probably local — a payment method or checkout step that doesn't work well on phones for that market — rather than your mobile site as a whole. Remember to clear the Segment afterwards, because it applies to every report.

Did a launch or promotion in a new market move sales?

  1. Set the date range to the period since the launch or promotion
  2. Click Compare and choose Previous period (or Previous year for seasonal businesses)
  3. Filter the table to the country with Country Code equals its code (for example DE)
  4. Read the change indicators on Entrances, Conversions and Revenue

How to read it: entrances up but conversions flat means the promotion brought traffic that didn't buy. Conversions and revenue up in line with entrances means the market responded. Each purchase is counted under the country resolved for the visit in which it happened — there is no cross-session or multi-touch attribution.

How dependent is my revenue on one country?

  1. Open Filters and add Country Code equals your main market's code
  2. Read the Filtered row: under Revenue it shows that country's share, for example "72.0% of total"
  3. Repeat with an OR group for your top two or three markets

How to read it: a very high share for a single country means a change in that market (shipping, taxes, a competitor, a payment provider) hits the whole business. Use it to decide whether diversifying into the countries identified in the cases above is worth the effort.

Regional Considerations

Europe (GDPR)

Sealmetrics does not depend on cookie consent, so traffic from EU countries is not reduced by visitors rejecting a consent banner. If you compare these figures with a consent-based analytics tool, expect EU countries to show more sessions and conversions in Sealmetrics — consent-based tools typically lose the visitors who reject or ignore the cookie banner depending on sector, brand and traffic mix. See Why Sealmetrics can measure without consent.

Time Zones

Consider when analyzing by country:

  • Traffic peaks at different times
  • Weekend patterns vary by culture
  • Holidays differ by country

Because the country itself is derived from the browser timezone, visitors whose device is set to another country's timezone are counted in that country.

Currency

Revenue is the sum of the amounts your conversions send, displayed with the currency set in Site Settings. Sealmetrics does not apply exchange rates: if your store charges in several currencies, send amounts in a single currency so that revenue per country is comparable. Also consider:

  • Local purchasing power
  • Price sensitivity by market

Export

Click Export above the table and choose Export as CSV or Export as PDF. The file includes:

  • The countries that match the active Segment and table filters (the search box is not applied)
  • Columns: Country Code, Country Name, Entrances, Pageviews, Bounce Rate, Conversions, Revenue
